2021 Nebbiolo - Glen Rose, Adelaida District Retail: $40 Wine Club $32
Ah, the King of grapes!! One of the beauties of this grape is that the lightness of color belies the breadth and complexity of the wine. As the glass approaches, we find dried rose petals and pipe tobacco; as the nose enters the glass rim, we find depth in luxardo cherry and plum, woodland understory, and a mist of aspen. It is such an intricate blend of fruit and spice, not full and rich but not lean, serious, and absorbing. As we sip, we find such texture; of course, The King is known for its wondrous tannins. Textures and flavors of damson skin and dried dark and red fruits, fruit leather, and again with the Aspen menthol lingering at the edges. So long and so willing to draw you back in.
2021 Grenache - Bassi Ranch Vineyard, San Luis Obispo Coast Retail: $40 Wine Club $32
This is such an interesting wine for us; it is a familiar clone of Grenache Noir but coast-grown, night and day. Lots of blue here, Boysenberry, wild blueberry, all laced with a cedar spice. It is bright, vibrant and lively. The bright character is apparent on the palate: blackberries from the bush, pomegranate acidity spice, and a great violet note. The finish is long and lively. It feels that this wine will be a long-lived one.
