Tasting Room
It looks to be a promising year in 2008 as it has begun with much needed rainfall; in fact it is blowing a gale and raining outside as I type this. We are all excited to put our new ideas for events into effect, and to release our new wines. The tasting room is still cozy as ever and has been updated with some new artwork and locally produced merchandise. Andy Needles' rustic woodwork has proven quite popular; we now carry a broad array of his hand-crafted works ranging from entryway tables to platters to stunning benches and rocking chairs. All of his work is created from felled wood, so not only does it look good, it is good for the environment. Rapidly gaining a reputation is the stylish and functional line of La Chamba cookware. Randy Augsburger's iron fish mobiles continue to impress and they have gone off to homes from California to Florida. Every piece that leaves our tasting room takes with it a story and a personal connection to our local artisans. But since words can't really do the tasting room justice, you'll have to stop by and take a gander yourself!
Garden
Here at the Lone Madrone nursery we are busy preparing for the onset of spring. In continuing our commitment to growing and selling organic herbs, we plan to offer a superior product: a plant that is ready to take off and thrive in your garden, not one that is pumped up on chemicals and grown in an unrealistic environment. We will continue to offer culinary herbs while expanding our selection of ornamental herbs, California native herbs, and culinary edible flowers, plants that are both useful and decorative.
A Few Words from Neil and Jackie
What does Neil have to say for himself...
For me, the people I work with are the critical factor of this whole process, indeed of life itself. We all know, of course, that where a grape is grown and how it is farmed are the two most important factors in the end quality of the wine. Great, but what the hell good does all that do if I can't stand the sight of the bloke who grew it, let alone sit down to a table and enjoy a meal with him and said wine? So, liking these people is key. The same goes for the folks who work at the tasting room and nursery at Lone Madrone: they may be a little odd and on occasion difficult ( but then so am I!), but I enjoy them, every one, and I appreciate that fact every time I walk through that door, it is indeed my pleasure.
New Vineyards
It was the first harvest for us in 2007 from the Dawson Creek Vineyards. Dawson Creek Vineyards are owned by Ron and Sheila Dawson, hence the name, I suppose. I have been after a bit of Albariño for some time, and I'll tell you, it is not easy to find. Those who have it, and they know who they are, won't let it go. So when I discovered this vineyard and was offered the opportunity to buy the driño, I jumped at the chance, of course. As if that was not enough there was also Grenache Blanc available – another slippery customer – I'll take that too. There is not much of either varietal, but the resulting wines have exceeded my expectations for a first vintage. Both wines are showing great balance with strong acidity coupled with beautiful fruit and a rare elegance. These wines will be a great addition to our white wine lineup. Both are ideal food wines.
The Heatons..Will's Hill Vineyard 2007
Neil and Ginny Heaton planted this vineyard on their stunning family ranch located in the hills of west Paso Robles. It is planted in the traditional head-pruned style, completely dry-farmed and done so organically – JUST HOW I LIKE 'EM!!! There are 247 Viognier vines – the only white planted in those hills. These lonely whities have produced one barrel of delicious wine (and I am not generally a Viognier fan.) The rest of Will's Hill and some of his flats as well, are planted with Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and Grenache Noir. All of which show incredible promise. They are, at this moment, all blended as one and resting in an undisclosed location where they will stay until they are good and ready to come out and play.
David Bailey ... 2006
David Bailey planted this vineyard on the old family property on Peachy Canyon Road. This is a head-pruned, dry-farmed vineyard that is certified organic, along with his walnuts. This wine is 100% Zin – old time Paso baby! Yeahh. It is all that you might expect and then just a wee bit extra. As yet unnamed; soon to be bottled, get ready for it.
The Von Dog
In July we will bottle a wine in honor of my good friend and Lone Madrone partner, Mr. Tom Vaughan. Tom passed away in 2007, not good! This wine is a blend that Tom and I were planning on blending together, but he didn't stick around long enough to do it. The wine is blended and in barrel. I promise you it will be a stunning bottle for many years. A blend of Tannat, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah it will be named The Von Dog. I believe it is all that Tom loved in a wine. I am proud to have been Tom's friend; this is my lasting tribute to him.
Missing Person
We do and will miss Maureen Herrera, Lone Madrone General Manager, who left us to pursue another business venture. Maureen was instrumental in setting up our tasting room and nursery when we first opened in 2006. Jackie and I speak for all of us at Lone Madrone when we say we loved working with her and being around her; each of us was shocked and much saddened to see her leave. There will always be a place for Mo at Lone Madrone. We wish her great success in her new endeavor and hope it brings her and her family happiness. Cheers Mo...
Overall
Well when all is said and done the year has been good, though stamped with the passing of Tom. I am still here and moderately fit, I get to work with some of the best vineyards in Paso, the greatest group of friends, and my business partner is my sister. Bristol Rovers have made it the ¼ finals of the FA Cup (Soccer's version of the Superbowl for those of you unfortunate enough not to follow soccer!) I get to eat, drink and be merry with you lot. As an old friend of mine used to say "life can be good if you let it." Cheers, Neil
Jackie's 2 Cents
2007 was a very busy and productive year at Lone Madrone and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our supporters for making that possible.
We are all devastated by the death of our friend and partner, Tom Vaughan. Tom was the most generous, kind, fun loving man one could ever hope to meet. His wonderful sense of humor and love of life is greatly missed by all of us here. As a tribute to Tom we plan to donate 10% of the proceeds from the sale of 'The Von Dog' to the Boys and Girls Club of Paso Robles. Tom was a long time supporter of this cause and this donation will be made in his name. We are sad that Tom will not be here to share a bottle (or 3!) with us. Cheers Tom, we miss you.
We are looking forward to 2008 being a great year; we have many plans, new varietals and fun events to share throughout the year. In February we will introduce our Wine Maker Private Tastings. These will take place from 9.30 -10.30 a.m. in the tasting room, one Saturday morning per month. These tastings will provide and insightful and educational opportunity for small groups to taste through the Lone Madrone wines with winemaker Neil Collins. The cost will be $25.00/person or $15/person for wine club members. For reservations please contact Jackie by e-mail – Jackie@lonemadrone.com call at 805-238-0845.
