Letter from Winemaker Neil Collins
Hello All...
And so it begins!! Having managed to avoid any bovine entanglement this year I was able to commence with harvest all parts and pieces in rough but working order. Quite an improvement over last season I must say!
The first think out of the gate was the Will's Hills dry farmed Viognier. Destined for the Points West White Rhone blend, the grapes looked and tasted beautiful. Now there is a whole gaggle of other grapey customers lying in wait about to descend upon me in their relentless desire to become fine vino. I will keep you posted...Well sort of!
We are going to make some changes in the pricing and structure of our line-up. We make these adjustments as we attempt to enter the cruel world of wholesale sales. We are entering this dangerous realm in an endeavor to enlighton those poor buggers who have apparently neither heard of nor tasted our wines yet, somewhat of an outreach in you will. The following changes will go into effect as of quite soon.
There will be a La Mezcla Red to keep the ever-popular La Mezcla white blend company. they will both retail for $22.00.
There will be, well actually there is already a Points West Red (Syrah/Mourvedre) to keep the Points West White from loneliness. These will both retail at $28.00.
We will be releasing our first vintage of The Will, essentially a field blend comprised of 41% Petite Sirah, 40% Grenache Noir and 19% Zinfandel all grown on the Will's Hills Vineyard by Neil and Ginny Heaton, dry farmed and head trained in the rugges limestone of West Paso Robles. This wine will be joined by our Bailey Ranch Zinfandel at the exceptionally reasonable retail cost of $33.00, come on!! For organically farmed, dry-farm, head-trained West Paso hillside fruite you gotta have you some of that...surely.
Rounding out the price changes we are re-introducing the 2005 Tannat at $40.00 a bottle. No excuses to not try a bottle of the only 100% Tannat produced in Paso, tasting full and beautiful right now, if I do say so myself.
Of course there maybe those who will take offence to the decrease in price and for those noble folks we can certainly charge more upon request.
I am very excited by the new wines and also by our slow but steady progress as a business. We all here at The Madrone hope you also are enjoying the ride. I read this quote in a book that I am currently involved in, I do not know the author but I like the quote:
"I often wonder what the vintners buy
One half so precious as the goods they sell."
On that valid note I say...
Be safe, Be well
EAT, DRINK AND BE VERY MERRY!
CHEERS,
Neil
